NFL ENCOURAGES OTHER PLAYERS TO FOLLOW TURLEY'S LEAD IN PROVING FUNDING TO HELP RETIRED PLAYERS IN DIRE NEED

In response to a statement made by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello in the New York Daily News which encouraged other active players to follow Kyle Turley's lead in helping retired players in need, Kyle Turley and The Gridiron Greats has issued this response:

The fact that the NFL is encouraging other players to join me in making a donation to be used to help their retired brothers who are in dire need is indeed encouraging.  Many active players have already contacted me and have agreed to stand with me and donate a portion or all of their game check to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund on December 23, 2007 " Gridiron Guardian Sunday".

I selected to do this with the Gridiron Greats organization for a number of reasons, one of the most important is that they are an independent humanitarian organization that is not affiliated with the union or the league in any way.

They also have a successful system in place that immediately distributes financial aid and social services to retired players without any red tape. Assistance is usually provided within 7 days and all calls are answered within 24 hours. They have a great track record of being responsive and providing hands-on assistance and care to many retired players in need.

There are so many players with big hearts I am expecting  many guys to sign on to participate; the response has been great so far.

-Kyle Turley

We are glad that the NFL has recognized Kyle Turley for donating an entire game check to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund and his initiative in getting active NFL players to donate money to help retired players in need.

Kyle’s funds and those received from all of the other active players will be immediately distributed to players that are in need assistance for a wide variety of reasons. While this is not the responsibility of the active players, we are very grateful for their support and thankful to the many who have already signed up to donate to the Gridiron Greats. With that said, this in no way excuses the NFLPA from cleaning up the broken disability and benefits system.
