Mike Mosley
Buffalo Bills
A promising career cut drastically short
Mike Mosley was a veteran of three NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills, and he played collegiately at Texas A&M as a star quarterback. During his three NFL seasons, he was a special teams standout, as the primary kick and punt returner on the 1982 Bills squad.
Unfortunately, injuries cut short his promising NFL career. It wasn’t one specific injury that derailed his hopes of NFL stardom, there were multiple serious injuries that made Mosley retire after the 1984 season.
After his days on the gridiron ended, Mosley’s life became increasingly more difficult to navigate. Initially, Mosley was given NFL disability payments for life, which was to have ensured the stability of his family. He is a single parent and has a daughter to support even though he is unable to work due to his injuries sustained from playing football. During a five year period, the NFLPA sent Mosley to multiple doctors seeking a new and updated opinion. After the five years of being classified as disabled by various doctors just one said he did not concur with the others and said he thought that Mosley was NOT disabled. On that one opinion the NFLPA revoked Mosley’s disability. Mosley believes he was a victim of doctor shopping. Mosely was never a multi-millionaire and never drew a huge NFL salary, and what money remained of his professional football days were spent on healthcare, medications and surgeries for his football-related injuries.
His plight became so dire and his health, psychological and financial situation so bleak, that Mosley was forced to move in with his 75 year old mother, while simultaneously raising a 14 year old daughter. Unfortunately, at this time, Mosely is unable to work and has been forced to feed his family with his mother’s social security payments.
With nowhere to turn, a long time friend of Mike Mosley’s reached out to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund. Since the intervention of the GGAF, efforts and social services have been rendered to the Mosley family. One of the first things done by the GGAF was putting Mosley through a rehabilitation to help ease Mosley away from narcotic painkillers. The pain killers were the only means he could afford to deal with the excruciating pain he deals with everyday. Medicines have also been purchased, doctor visits were made, and the GGAF helped to secure a vehicle for the Mosely family.
