Willie Wood (Packers 1960-1971)
- Willie Wood is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame
- Willie suffers from a myriad of medical problems—particularly early stage dementia, diabetes, and orthopedic problems which are a direct result of football; he was a very physical player. These injuries have resulted in his being completely wheelchair-bound.
- For many months he had been in an assisted living facility and his financial resources were dwindling.
- Skyrocketing medical costs and his need to be in an assisted living facility has caused a huge hardship on Willie and he is basically broke
(Chargers 1976-1980/Patriots 1981).-
- When contacted GGAF, he was homeless (living in his truck).
- Suffering from diabetes and the loss of his left eye and many football related injuries
- His only source of income was his NFL Pension (which is below $1000 per month).
- He was able to get jobs from time to time but his medical condition prevented him from being able to hold them for very long.
- He received assistance from the NFLPA’s Player Assistance Trust but once awarded the grant; he became ineligible for further NFLPA assistance as there is a waiting period before you are eligible for further assistance.
Ann Forester (Widow of Bill Forrester, Packers 1953-1963).
- Bill Forester passed away on April 27, 2007 after a long illness (Parkinson’s, Dementia)
- Although his wife continued to work, she had been struggling with mounting expenses from Bill’s illness.
- Bill’s relatively small pension from the NFL was cut in half when he passed away.
- She needed assistance with medical costs for Bill but ended up have to use them for his funeral costs.
Donnie Green (Bills 1971-1976/Eagles 1977/Lions 1978):
- Donnie lives in a homeless shelter in Hagerstown, Maryland.
- In exchange for working at the Mission he receives food and shelter and a small amount of “pocket change”.
- His only other source of income is his pension, which is under $600 per month.
- He has a very serious heart condition that he is unable to treat properly. He has insurmountable prior medical bills due to several episodes of congestive heart failure. And endures many football related injuries
- Donnie was a member of the fames Buffalo Bills Electric Company
Mike Mosley (Bills 1981-1984)
- Pro football career ended after only four years due to injuries sustained while playing the game.
- Fourteen years after he retired, he was made aware of the fact that he was able to apply for disability from the NFL.
- Immediately after his application and examination by the NFL’s appointed doctors, he was granted disability. That disability lasted only four years.
- Upon review of the case, a different physician assigned by the plan determined that Mike could perform sedentary work. All financial assistance was quickly withdrawn.
- For the last three years, Mike had been struggling to survive, while raising a 14 year old daughter as a single father.
- Suffers from a myriad of physical and emotional disorders, including an addiction to pain killers.
- Lives with his elderly mother whose only income is her social security checks (his father is paralyzed and is living in a nursing care facility).
Bears Player 1964-1968/Saints 1969-1970
- Age 64, suffers from a number of medical conditions including, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, chronic hypertension, and severe neuropathy (dysfunctional nervous system).
- He has been unable to work due to all of his medical problems and he had depleted all of his savings in trying to make ends meet.
- Receives $88/month from the NFL as his pension.
- Was in jeopardy of losing his home and his health insurance which he relies on heavily. .
Patriots Player 1973-1976
- Suffers from diabetes and severe depression.
- Recently began suffering from another undiagnosed medical condition. He is in severe pain. He has been going through a series of tests to determine the cause of his pain but doctors have been unable to determine its cause.
- Unable to work, has moved in with his mother and the family has been struggling to make ends meet.
- Receives no pension or disability from NFL due to the fact he is not vested. In the 70's vesting in the 70's required more years played than it does now.
