Brian Demarco is only 35 years old and is one of the many retired NFL Players in dire need that is receiving financial aid and social services from the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund. He is by far the youngest player the fund is providing aid to.
Brain is a five year veteran of the NFL. He was a second round draft pick from Michigan State. In the NFL he enjoyed a successful career as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars and was a member of their inaugural team. As a rookie he started every game and was an integral part of Jacksonville’s AFC Championship team. He retired from the NFL at the age of 27 due to disabling injuries.
His back is fractured in 17 places, his elbows were both shattered, and he has significant nerve damage. Often times his hands do not work and he loses all feeling from them. Due to the severe back injuries, Brian can barley walk. He also suffered a minimum of 12 concussions and now suffers from headaches and tremors. All of Brian’s injuries are a direct result of his NFL career. Over the years he has exhausted all of his savings on medical care. NFL players lose their health insurance just a few years after football and can not obtain health insurance for their pre-existing football injuries.
Brian is married and has two children, Enzo who is16 months and Belize who is 5 years old. Brian and his family have been homeless three times in the last two years and at one point they were living in a storage unit. Brian and his wife often go several days with out eating so their kids can have food. Brian can’t afford his medicine or medical care. He cannot work and requires full time care.
The families dire situation is due to the fact that Brian does not currently receive any disability support from the NFLPA. He has been trying to get disability from the NFLPA for four years. He has phoned the NFLPA over 100 times in the last several months.
When his wife, Autumn, contacted the Gridiron Greats, they had not eaten in three days and were feeding their two children crackers, they had no money, were about to be evicted, had no car, and none of Brian’s required medicine. Thanks to the support the Gridiron Greats receive through public donations, the fund has been able to provide them with medicine, medical care, food, shelter, and even a car which was donated by a football fan from California.
The Gridiron Greats have a major fundraising drive underway for the Demarco family, and the many other players and their families who are in dire need, due to inadequate disability and pension.
